The Silverdale New Vision project has consistently provided the local community with a positive opportunity to be directly involved in shaping the future of the area.
Local people helped to inform the site masterplan and will continue to be involved during the detailed design stages.
The overwhelming preference from the community during the masterplanning was for a mixed-use development including informal/formal leisure uses and new housing.
February 2005 saw the project team undertake a community consultation to discuss plans for the area in greater detail. The proposed masterplan was re–presented to the community for comment over a two week period with a drop in consultation day attended by over 200 members of the local community. This provided an opportunity to meet the project team and feed valuable comments into the process.
Briefing meetings were also held with the Parish Council, Newcastle-under-Lyme ward members and the local MP Paul Farrelly.
Following this community consultation, the plans were revised and developed incorporating community comments where possible. The progressed illustrative masterplan was then exhibited at a public exhibition for the local community in February 2006. This gave residents the chance to discuss the plans with the project team before submission of the outline planning application to Newcastle–under–Lyme Borough Council.
A one week display of the masterplan was held at the Silverdale Information Centre and Parksite Action Centre as well as a drop–in day at St Luke’s Church with the project partners. Over 300 residents of Silverdale and Parksite took the opportunity to view the exhibition over the week.
Residents were also able to make comment on the outline planning application to the borough council submitted by English Partnerships after the masterplan was completed. This was approved by the council in late 2006.
Community engagement and publicity will continue throughout the progression of the design and delivery of the project.
