The masterplan has been revised and reworked following consultation held last year,
when residents continued to feed back their thoughts and aspirations for the local
community.
The Silverdale project team, led by English Partnerships, the national regeneration
agency, in consultation with Newcastle under Lyme Borough Council, Staffordshire
County Council and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, will submit the planning
application by the beginning of March.
The regeneration of Silverdale Colliery is being funded through English Partnerships'
£386.5m National Coalfields Programme.
Fiona Piercy, English Partnerships' Senior Regeneration Manager, West Midlands said:
"This is a very significant moment for the residents of Silverdale. With their help
we have created a masterplan which we believe will bring real benefits to this area,
now and in the future.
“Wherever possible, local needs have been considered and incorporated. We are keen
to submit these proposals for outline planning consent and take them forward.”
Since the consultation last year, the plans have evolved considerably and local
people will see that their feedback has produced some clear developments and changes
to the illustrative scheme.
The regeneration and development of the Silverdale site will link to the economic
development of the area and support existing local services. The planned new housing
will be of high design quality and environmental standards.
Some of the key elements include:
- A new village square, which will become a focal point for the community.
- A green ‘spine’ running through the site, creating a leafy walkway beside a
new water feature, which will also help divert excess rainwater from High Lane
Lake at the top of the village.
- A mix of housing tenure including affordable housing.
- 300 houses of many different designs and sizes that front onto streets to create
safe and attractive places to live.
- Private courtyards where people can park their cars, together with some off road
parking.
- Lots of walking routes to the surrounding area including Apedale Country Park and
pedestrian-friendly road layouts to encourage slower vehicle speeds.
- A series of play areas, with children’s play equipment.
The provision of space for sporting activities was of particular note in earlier
consultation activity. Newcastle-Under-Lyme Borough Council is currently undertaking a
needs survey to assess the potential for such amenities. A final decision on the matter
will be based on the results of this study.
A location for a potential community building has been identified and awaits the
results of a consultation and a feasibility study being led by the community’s Silverdale
& District New Vision Steering Group, to determine need, nature and funding methods.
The masterplan can be seen at the following locations:
- Silverdale Information Centre from Monday 13 February to Friday 17 February between 9am and 12 midday.
- Parksite Action Centre from Monday 13 February to Thursday 16 February between 9am and 5pm.
A drop-in day has been arranged for Friday 17 February between 12 midday and 7pm at St
Luke’s Church, when local people can meet members of the project team who will advise on how
to respond to the statutory planning process.
The application will be available to view in full at Newcastle under Lyme Borough Council
